Every year, Merton joins the nation and unites on Remembrance Sunday to honour the services of our armed forces and to remember those who have sacrificed their lives to secure and protect our freedom.

This year, to comply with social distancing measures as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the boroughs Remembrance Sunday parades will not go ahead and the services at our war memorials will be closed to the public.

Mayor of Merton, Councillor Sally Kenny said: “In the year when we have marked the 75th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day, it is with great sadness that this year’s Remembrance events have had to be severely restricted and the boroughs usual parades unable to go ahead.

“The safety of everyone during this extraordinary time is paramount, which is why I am asking residents to stay safe and pay tribute from home on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. I know this is will be disappointing for many people, but there are still many ways we can all show support for our Armed Forces Community.

“Wear your poppy with pride, download and print The Royal British Legions iconic Remembrance Poppy to display at home, watch the broadcast of the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph on Whitehall in London on Sunday 8 November, and view the borough’s Armistice Day service from home on Wednesday 11 November.

“Although this year is going to be a little different, I know we will all come together to honour those who served and remember their sacrifice.”

A nomination has been made for the next mayor of Merton – who serves as the ceremonial and civic head of the borough.

At the Cabinet meeting on Monday 22 March, the Council Leader, Councillor Mark Allison, announced that the Labour group is nominating Councillor Mike Brunt to be the next Mayor of Merton.

Councillor Brunt, who represents Figge’s Marsh Ward, is a former leader of Merton Council and a former Cabinet Member for the Environment. Councillor Brunt is currently interim Cabinet Member for Local Environment and Green Spaces, covering the role for Councillor Natasha Irons, who is currently on maternity leave and is due to return in April.

At the Annual Council Meeting on 19 May, the full Council will decide who to appoint as Mayor of Merton for the municipal year 2021/22.

Councillor Allison said: “The Labour group is pleased to nominate Councillor Mike Brunt to become the next Mayor of Merton. Mike has a sterling record of service to the borough, including as a former council leader, and has most recently agreed to be Merton’s first ever interim cabinet member to cover maternity leave.”

Councillor Allison paid tribute to the current Mayor of Merton, Councillor Sally Kenny, who has served the borough during an unprecedented year.

Councillor Allison said: “I would like to thank Councillor Sally Kenny for her hard work and dedication to representing Merton, during what has been an extraordinary mayoral term. During the second wave of the pandemic, Councillor Kenny has highlighted the everyday efforts of residents to help their neighbours by setting up the Mayor’s Covid-19 Award, which recognises the community spirit which makes Merton a great place to live. Councillor Kenny has also tirelessly fundraised to support her two nominated charities – Merton and Morden Guild of Social Services and Morden Little League.”

The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Sally Kenny, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh and our thoughts and condolences are with the Royal Family as they mourn their loss.

“Prince Philip made a tremendous contribution to public life, both as the Queen’s Consort, and through his own tireless work for charities and public engagements over more than 70 years. He leaves an incredible legacy through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which equips young people with a range of life skills.”

In line with all public buildings in the UK, we have arranged for the Union flag outside the Civic Centre to be flown at half mast, while the country pays its respects.

Merton residents are invited to add a message to our online book of condolence, which will be open until 6pm the day after the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

The Royal Family have opened a book of condolence on their website: http://www.royal.uk

The Royal Family have asked people to consider making a donation to a charity of their choice, or to one of the Duke of Edinburgh’s patronages, in memory of His Royal Highness instead of travelling into central London to leave floral tributes at palaces: www.royal.uk/floral-tributes

In Merton, there are two locations where the public can lay flowers. These are at Mitcham Jubilee Clock Tower and the area outside the New Wimbledon Theatre. Please observe social distancing if you wish to lay a floral tribute.

Details about The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, on Saturday 17 April, have been announced by the Royal Family on their website: http://www.royal.uk/funeral-duke-edinburgh-0

The funeral service will begin with a national minute’s silence, which will be observed at 3pm.

A new Mayor of Merton has been elected by the Council.

At a meeting tonight (Wednesday 21 April) Councillor Michael Brunt was elected as Mayor for the 2021/22 municipal year.

Councillor Brunt, who represents Figge’s Marsh Ward, is a former leader of Merton Council and a former Cabinet Member for the Environment. Councillor Brunt is currently interim Cabinet Member for Local Environment and Green Spaces, covering the role for Councillor Natasha Irons, who has just returned from maternity leave.

Councillor Edith Macauley MBE will be Deputy Mayor.

Both will start their duties from 19 May.

Until then, the current Mayor, Councillor Sally Kenny and Deputy Mayor, Councillor John Dehaney, will continue in their roles, carrying out engagements in compliance with Covid guidance.

The Council agreed to bring their annual meeting forward from 19 May to tonight (21 April) so that it could be held virtually. The Government’s Covid legislation does not permit virtual council meetings to continue after 7 May and there are concerns that vulnerable councillors and council staff may not have all been offered a Covid vaccination by then. The High Court was due to consider this issue at a hearing held earlier today (21 April).

The new first citizen of Merton has dedicated his year in office to supporting and celebrating the work of carers.

Councillor Michael Brunt was elected as Mayor for the 2021/22 municipal year by the Council at a meeting on 21 April. This meeting was convened a month earlier than usual, so that it could be held virtually. Today (19 May) Councillor Brunt begins his duties, taking over from Councillor Sally Kenny.

Councillor Brunt, who represents Figge’s Marsh Ward, is a former leader of Merton Council and a former Cabinet Member for the Environment. Councillor Brunt served as the authority’s first ever interim Cabinet Member, covering the Local Environment and Green Spaces portfolio while Councillor Natasha Irons was on maternity leave earlier this year.

Councillor Brunt said: “It is a great honour to be elected as mayor of the place I was born in and grew up in. I have so much to thank Merton for and I hope that over the coming year I can demonstrate that gratitude and give something back to Merton.

“The last year has been full of challenges for us all. I hope that as we emerge from this lockdown that I can meet more people in person and recognise the hard work of so many in our community. In particular, I would like to celebrate the work of carers in Merton and that will be the theme for my year – caring.”

To reflect this, Councillor Brunt’s chosen charities are Christian CARE Association Merton, which provides emotional support and practical help for people who have no recourse to public funds and Marie Curie, a charity which supports people at the end of their lives and their families. Councillor Brunt’s joint chaplains are Rev Belemo Alagoa and Rev Alison Judge from the Merton Priory Team.

Councillor Brunt will be supported during the coming year by his consort, his mother, Joan Brunt, and by Deputy Mayor, Councillor Edith Macauley MBE.

Remembrance services in Merton

Every year, Merton joins the nation and unites on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday to pay tribute to the millions of men and women who gave their service and often their lives to protect the freedom of their fellow countrymen and future generations.

Last year, social distancing measures around the Covid-19 pandemic meant that, for the first time, we were unable to mark these events in the usual way and were forced to hold smaller, socially distanced events across the borough.

This year, we are proud to announce that larger-scale services in the borough will return, with events held on Thursday 11, Armistice Day, at Merton Civic Centre and at the Mitcham War Memorial. Both these ceremonies will begin at 10.50am and be attended by local dignitaries

On Sunday 14, alongside ceremonies across the nation such as at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, there will be a service of remembrance at the Nelson Health Centre, Kingston Road, at 9am. The mayor, Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond, leaders of political parties, and the heads of Merton’s NHS, police and fire services will attend.

There will subsequently be a procession from Wimbledon Village Hall beginning at 10.25am to the War Memorial on Wimbledon Common, where at 11am a two-minute silence will be held to remember those who have died in all Britain’s wars. This will be followed by the playing of The Last Post.

Mayor of Merton, Councillor Michael Brunt, said: “It is with great sadness that we were unable to mark the solemn occasion of Remembrance Sunday last year due to social distancing restrictions in place due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We return in 2021 to our usual ceremonies that remembers and pays tributes to the sacrifices of hundreds of thousands of men and women who kept this country safe and free over many centuries.

“It’s keenly important that as the numbers of veterans of past wars sadly diminish, we continue to come together to remember what they and their fallen comrades did in service of their country and we will continue to appropriately commemorated them while protecting public health.”

Anyone wishing to attend this week’s ceremonies is reminded to maintain Covid-19 protocols, such as wearing a face mask, and we ask you to ensure that you follow government advice for mass gatherings for the sake of the health and safety of all participants.
